Important Information for Travelers from the U.S.

Travel rules between Canada and the United States have changed.  Travelers now require documentation to cross the border in both directions.

For citizens of the United States, for travel after June 1, 2009, this means either a passport OR a passport card is required for returning to the U.S.  This requirement affects all adult travelers.

Current information is that U.S. citizen children under the age of 16 will be able to present the original or copy of their birth certificate, or other proof of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate or citizenship card.

Please note that in cases where children are not traveling with BOTH of their parents, a notarized letter from the absent parent(s) may be required for crossing the border (in either direction).  If your family is bringing another child, please ensure you have adequate documentation for that child.

Please find out what the particular requirements are for your particular situation, by visiting any of the following websites, or by consulting a travel agent.

If you do not have a passport, and if you require one, please apply early.  Applications submitted 3 months in advance of travel would be prudent.

Please note that in certain cases, a passport card may be suitable (not accepted for air travel), and this may be a more cost-effective choice.
