Book One: starts Friday July 3, 6 pm;
ends Friday July 10, by 4:30 pm

Instructor:  Jane Kutscher Reed

Here is an opportunity to make a career choice that will change your life.  Becoming a Suzuki teacher enables you to develop superior skills, and have a positive and dramatic impact on the lives of parents and students. Suzuki teachers are committed to the belief that every child is capable of learning, and that each adult can develop and improve his teaching skills.  Potential Suzuki teachers begin their training possessing fine playing skills and willingly accept a commitment to life-long learning.

Each unit of Suzuki teacher training focuses on one Suzuki book level.  Book One consists of 28 hours of class, and 15 hours of observation of Institute lessons.  All subsequent levels comprise 15 hours of class, and 8 hours of observation. The completion of a specific volume of study gives you the credentials to teach at that level.

Class time consists of:

  • Exploring the repertoire
  • Recognizing the teaching points of each piece
  • Developing technical skills
  • Addressing musicianship

In addition, participants will study the application of the Suzuki philosophy:

  • Advantage of beginning musical study at a young age
  • Educational value of listening
  • Purpose of review
  • Value of parental involvement

Participants should bring a notebook, the Suzuki Music volume to be studied, the CD of the same volume, and a willingness to explore and learn.

Course Options:

The course may be taken as a participant or as an auditor.

  • Participant:  The course will be registered with the SAA by Suzuki Kingston Musicfest on behalf of the participant, enabling them to go on to subsequent levels of study.
  • Auditor:  The course will not be registered with the SAA, and in order for an auditor to subsequently register the course, it will need to be re-taken.

The SAA strongly suggests taking teacher training courses as a participant, and registering each unit. However, if a teacher is unable to meet the course attendance, observation, or audition requirements, she may enroll as an auditor.  An auditor may not register the unit with the SAA, and may play in class only at the instructor's discretion.

♪  Those wishing to receive professional coaching prior to submitting an audition video may enroll in our new Piano Teacher Development Course. For more information, click here.

Prerequisites to Training

Every Child Can!® (ECC) is required prior to taking Book 1. The trainee must be a current member of the SAA. These prerequisites apply equally to full participants and to auditors.

Course Order

Courses must be taken in order through Book 2: ECC, Book 1, Book 2.

Audition Requirement

To qualify as a participant in training courses rather than auditor, applicants must submit a video audition of specified repertoire to the SAA, preferably prior to enrollment. Videos should be submitted at least 8 weeks prior to the course start date, with the required fees and a completed application form. If submitted later than 8 weeks before the course start date, audition results determining participant eligibility may not be available prior to the course, and will requires late audition fees. For courses occurring during summer 2009, applicants submitting tapes later than March 31, 2009 may not receive audition results prior to the course, even if meeting the above deadlines. An applicant may enroll late as “tape pending”, but will incur late audition fees, and audition results determining eligibility for participant credit will probably not be available until after the course. If auditions from “tape pending” applicants are not accepted, their course work will not be eligible retroactively for SAA credit registration as a participant, only as an auditor—even if course work was completed. For further information, please see the SAA website at www.suzukiassociation.org and find the downloadable video audition application form (with instructions) in the teacher section, or call the SAA toll free 1-888-378-9854 for this form.

Required Course Preparation

All teacher training participants are asked to prepare the repertoire to be studied to the point of fluent performance. Memorization is not required but is recommended. Additionally, participants should be conversant with the ideas presented in Dr. Suzuki’s Nurtured by Love.

All participants will be performing in class. It is recommended that participants bring a notebook to all sessions. 100% attendance is required for registering the course.
